Revealing Hidden Costs In Hydronic Cooling And Heating Systems

Abstract

This presentation focuses on proven opportunities to improve the performance, decrease the energy usage, and reduce the operating costs of chilled water, heating hot water, and glycol systems. Included is a review of how air present in a hydronic fluid reduces the heat transfer capability of the fluid and all heat transfer surfaces it contacts, reduces pump performance, and causes system-wide corrosion of ferrous materials. The content features case studies documenting system performance improvements, energy efficiency increases, and water treatment chemical reductions after removing air and the associated corrosion from these systems. Discussion will include data presented in industry white papers, manuals, and guidebooks that quantify the negative impact of varying levels of entrained air on pump performance.

The presentation will also address the results of an extensive energy modeling and financial analysis evaluating the increased energy usage and associated costs due to air in chilled water and heating hot water systems. The financial analysis includes various metrics related to utility cost and non-utility cost savings linked to effective air and dirt elimination from hydronic cooling and heating systems. This exercise utilized actual case history data developed over several decades in a multi-iteration modeling exercise of a prototypical facility, with the building modeled in five different U.S. cities. Each model was adapted to address site-specific weather data and energy rates and the building/system modifications required for ASHRAE 90.1 compliance for each location.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone involved in the ownership, management, design, installation, operation, energy analysis, project management, commissioning, test and balance, maintenance, or service work related to hydronic cooling and heating systems.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain a better understanding of the negative impact air and dirt in a hydronic fluid has on the performance, energy efficiency/consumption, maintenance of any cooling or heating system
  • Learn to identify symptoms and sources of air in hydronic systems
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of various air and dirt elimination technologies
  • Identify the utility cost and non-utility cost benefits and savings associated with effective air and dirt elimination

CxEnergy 2020 Virtual Conducting Webinar on Key Changes in ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2019

June 7, 2020

Session will Highlight Commissioning and Comparisons to the current International Energy Efficiency Code

The popular CxEnergy 2020 Virtual webinar series will next examine the overhauled ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2019 which provides minimum requirements for energy efficient designs for buildings. The timely event includes an examination of the commissioning requirements for the new edition as well as comparisons to the current International Energy Efficiency Code. Many states apply ASHRAE 90.1 to buildings being constructed or under renovation and most apply it (or comparable standards) for all commercial buildings.

CxEnergy Virtual is presented by the Energy Management Association (EMA), along with its affiliates the Associated Air Balance Council (AABC) and AABC Commissioning Group (ACG). ACG’s Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA) Certification comprises the world’s largest group of independent, certified commissioning professionals.

Abstract: ASHRAE Standard 90.1–Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings–was recently overhauled to clarify commissioning requirements for the 2019 edition. An important expansion of typical commissioning work is a review of the design for compliance with 90.1 requirements. The boundaries between a full commissioning project and items required in 90.1 will be explained. In addition, comparisons to the current version of the International Energy Efficiency Code will be made.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the commissioning requirements in ASHRAE Standard 90.1.
  2. List additional Cx items required by 90.1 not typically included in the Cx process.
  3. Note the differences between standard 90.1 and the IECC relative to Commissioning required by energy codes.
  4. Describe the difference between normative requirements and informative information in energy codes.

COVID-19 Update

Dear CxEnergy attendees, ACG, EMA & AABC members:

After taking into account the current COVID-19 situation, continued hotel restrictions due to the virus, current registration numbers and, most importantly, feedback from our members and other potential attendees, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors on their willingness to attend in-person, the ACG Board of Directors has made the decision to hold CxEnergy 2021 as a fully virtual event.

The Board did not make this decision lightly, holding biweekly discussions since November on the status of the conference. In the end, they concluded that because of the continuing uncertainty, pivoting now to a virtual event was the best decision. This will allow the event to take place during the month of April, while bringing the largest number of educational sessions to the greatest number of people.

Registration, including free access for members of ACG, EMA and ACG, will open soon. To see the complete virtual program, click here. Highlights of this year’s format include:

  • Two live virtual presentations each week during the month of April (Tuesdays & Thursdays).
  • A short virtual business session for ACG and EMA association updates.
  • 8 additional prerecorded technical sessions available to members and registered attendees, for a total of 16 hours of educational offerings.
  • A separate, dedicated “Technology Day,” designed to allow you to attend short, rapid-fire sessions with CxEnergy exhibitors over a period of a few hours, to keep up with their latest offerings in support of your commissioning, energy management, and testing businesses, as well as the opportunity to win a number of sponsored prizes.

More information will be forthcoming soon. Please email [email protected] with any questions. We hope that you are all staying safe and healthy, and we look forward to seeing you virtually again this year and then in person again, finally, in Orlando in 2022!

Sincerely,

ACG Headquarters Staff
